The initiative, spearheaded by Michael Ani, a two-time Special Olympics World Games Head Coach based in Germany, aims not only to promote sports but also to inspire young individuals to pursue their dreams despite any challenges they may face.

“Inclusivity is a cornerstone of this clinic,” Ani emphasized. “We are particularly focused on children with disabilities, aiming to create a more inclusive Nigerian society through sports and empowerment.”

Ani’s commitment to this cause dates back to 2008 when he started volunteering and coaching individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. Recognizing the lack of opportunities and societal stigma, Ani and Special Olympics Nigeria established the first basketball team for people with disabilities, laying the groundwork for inclusive sports programs.

“Despite relocating to Germany to further my professional basketball career, my dedication to our mission remains steadfast,” Ani stated. “Since 2010, I’ve returned annually to conduct coaching sessions and basketball training in Nigeria, culminating in the introduction of Unified Games that promote teamwork between athletes with and without disabilities.”

The impact of these efforts has been significant, leading Nigerian teams to participate in global events such as the World Games in Los Angeles (2015) and Abu Dhabi (2019), showcasing the power of sports in fostering inclusion and providing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Apart from sports development, the clinic also gives back to society through educational programs, equipment donations, and scholarships, reinforcing its commitment to improving lives beyond the basketball court.

In summary, the MGBF Lagos basketball program not only aims to enhance sporting skills but also stands as a testament to the transformative power of inclusivity and community engagement in Nigeria.
