As NNPC prepares to launch three mini LNG facilities, Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), emphasized key strategies for shaping Nigeria and Africa’s energy future. These include adopting gas technology, crafting effective policy frameworks, securing financing, enhancing capacity building, and fostering entrepreneurship. Mr. Mele Kyari, Group CEO of NNPC Limited, highlighted the corporation’s recent investments in the gas sector aimed at bolstering supply and utilization. Represented by Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President for Gas, Power, and New Energies, Kyari announced NNPC’s involvement in groundbreaking three mini LNG projects scheduled for August. He also underscored NNPC’s leadership in the federal government’s auto-gas initiative, including plans to finalize investment decisions and deploy six additional CNG mother-station plants by year-end.
Amina Benkhadra, Director General of Morocco’s National Office for Hydrocarbons and Mines, identified significant investment opportunities exceeding $245 billion for gas infrastructure development across Africa. She emphasized the pivotal role of gas pipelines, terminals, and processing plants in attracting investors. The summit, themed “Igniting the Future: Driving Sustainability in Africa’s Energy Landscape through Gas Technology and Innovation,” underscored the need for approximately $100 billion in annual investments to meet the continent’s electricity demand by 2030, with a projected total investment requirement of $3 trillion by 2050.
In his welcome address, Salahudeen Tahir, Chairman of SPE Nigeria Council, highlighted the critical juncture of Africa’s energy sector, citing challenges such as financing constraints, technological gaps, high production costs, infrastructure limitations, global energy transition pressures, and security concerns.
