Speaking during an interview with ARISE Television on Tuesday night, shortly after Buhari’s burial, Malami dismissed public criticisms suggesting that the Buhari-led government tolerated corruption. He pointed to the recovery of over $2 billion in stolen assets as a testament to the administration’s commitment to fighting graft.

Malami also emphasized the international recognition garnered by Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade. He noted that Buhari was named Africa’s anti-corruption champion by the African Union and received commendations from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

He highlighted the implementation of critical financial accountability tools such as the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN), which he credited with sealing systemic loopholes.

“Under President Muhammadu Buhari, corruption had no room to thrive,” Malami said. “When it comes to convictions involving high-profile corruption cases, the government recorded thousands. No matter the yardstick used to measure it, Buhari’s achievements in this area are undeniable.”

He further explained that Buhari’s reforms brought greater transparency and accountability to government finances.

Responding to allegations that the Buhari administration shielded political allies and disregarded court rulings, Malami insisted that all actions were taken within the legal framework.

“When a judgment is delivered and you decide to appeal while applying for a stay of execution, you are still operating within the law,” he clarified. “The rule of law is not about blind compliance but following due legal process.”

Malami also defended the controversial presidential pardons granted to former governors Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame, stressing that the move was lawful and in line with constitutional provisions.

“The law provides room for state pardons in exceptional cases,” he said. “Though they were convicted, the pardons were granted legally. Therefore, any criticism lacks legal merit.”
