Sh*ck Twist: Court Reveals Yahaya Bello’s Passport Is With Federal High Court, Not FCT
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has clarified that it does not have custody of the international passport belonging to Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State. According to the court, the document is currently with the Federal High Court in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This clarification came during Thursday’s proceedings in the ongoing money laundering case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Bello. Justice Maryann Anenih explained that although the former governor had applied for the release of his passport to seek medical attention abroad, the FCT High Court could not grant such a request since it doesn’t hold the passport.
Justice Anenih stated that even if the application were to be approved, it would be ineffective because the passport is not within the FCT court’s jurisdiction but is with Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court.
Bello faces related charges in both the FCT and Federal High Courts. His lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), had also admitted that the travel document is with the Federal High Court, not the FCT court.
A review of the FCT court’s records initially suggested that Bello had been ordered to deposit his passport with its registry. However, upon further checks, it was confirmed that the passport is not there. Bello himself deposed in an affidavit that his documents were deposited with the Federal High Court as part of a bail condition.
“The passport cannot be in two places at once,” Justice Anenih emphasized, adding, “This court cannot issue an order that would have no practical effect.”
Following the ruling, the case was adjourned to October 8, 9 and November 13, 2025 for further hearing.
Earlier, on July 8, the court had reserved its decision on Bello’s application to July 17. The EFCC, in response, had submitted a counter-affidavit arguing that allowing Bello to travel could stall the trial.
