The governor emphasized that embracing these modern skill sets is essential to address the rising unemployment rate, especially among highly educated Nigerians.

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Owan-Enoh, at the closing ceremony of a five-day intensive training for 200 young people, Governor Otu expressed concern over the shrinking job market and its effect on graduates.

“There are countless Master’s and PhD holders who are unemployed—many have resorted to driving taxis to survive,” he said.
“It’s distressing to witness young adults in their 30s and 40s still relying on their parents for support.”

Governor Otu highlighted the growing need for practical, tech-based skills over paper credentials, and encouraged the trainees to make the most of the opportunity.

“It’s encouraging to see young men and women pursuing innovative and technical skills that can offer both financial independence and long-term opportunities,” he remarked.
“Productivity is the core of a meaningful life. Embrace modern technology to become self-reliant and economically productive.”

While acknowledging the value of academic accomplishments, the governor made it clear that in today’s fast-evolving digital economy, degrees alone are no longer a reliable pathway to employment.

“You need to work harder and think differently if you want to earn a living—especially when your degree isn’t opening doors,” he added.

Governor Otu praised the training initiative, saying such empowerment programs are vital to unlocking new economic opportunities for Nigerian youth.
