The directive was announced during Wednesday’s State Executive Council meeting as part of measures aimed at strengthening discipline, focus, and accountability in governance.
Otu made it clear that any appointee with political ambitions for 2027 would not be permitted to remain in office beyond the deadline.
“As Governor of Cross River State, I have directed that any member of the State Executive Council, as well as all political appointees intending to contest the 2027 general elections, must resign on or before March 26, 2026,” he said.
He stressed that public office should not be used as a platform for personal political advancement, describing it as a position of trust that requires full dedication.
“Public office is a sacred responsibility and must never be mixed with personal political ambition,” he added.
The governor warned that his administration would not allow distractions that could affect service delivery or governance efficiency.
“Our people deserve our full attention, and this administration will not compromise on that duty,” he said.
Otu noted that the government’s current priority is to deliver on its mandate without disruptions from early political activities.
“At this crucial stage, our focus is to govern effectively, fulfill our promises, and ensure that governance is not distracted by premature political engagements,” he stated.
He urged all appointees to remain committed to their duties and prioritize the welfare of citizens.
“We must remain steadfast in serving the people who entrusted us with leadership,” he said.
The governor clarified that the directive was not punitive but intended to promote fairness and institutional integrity.
“This decision is not punitive; it is based on principle. It aligns with global best practices and ensures a level playing field for all aspirants while protecting government institutions,” he explained.
Reaffirming his administration’s agenda, Otu said efforts would continue in key sectors aimed at boosting economic growth and improving governance.
“We remain committed to our development agenda, strengthening the economy, expanding partnerships, and increasing internally generated revenue to build a more resilient Cross River State,” he added.
He ordered strict compliance with the directive, urging affected officials to take it seriously.
“I expect full compliance with this order,” he warned.
Otu concluded by urging leaders to place the interests of the state above personal ambition.
“Let us uphold discipline, accountability, and selfless service. The progress of our state must always come before individual aspirations,” he said.
The directive comes less than 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu issued a similar order mandating political appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to resign by March 31, 2026.
