The response follows reports that a delegation from the British High Commission attended the convention held in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the ADC, the three-member delegation was led by the Political Secretary at the High Commission, Thomas Samson, and included a Nigerian staff member, Damilola Oyedele. The party also claimed that Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai was present at the event.
However, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria refuted this claim, stating that neither the ambassador nor any of its diplomats attended. The embassy added that the Asian individual seen at the event was not known to the mission.
Reacting to the development, a spokesperson for the FCDO explained that diplomatic missions commonly engage with various political and civic groups, including political parties.
The spokesperson noted that officials from the British High Commission, like their counterparts from other countries, are often invited to and attend a wide range of events, including those organised by political parties. Such participation, they said, reflects the UK’s commitment to supporting democratic processes in Nigeria.
While the UK did not directly confirm or deny the attendance of its representatives at the ADC convention, it emphasised its continued support for credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections through efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions.
Although diplomatic missions typically maintain contact with multiple political stakeholders, appearances at party conventions—especially where officials are publicly acknowledged—are relatively uncommon.
The ADC, positioning itself as a key opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections, has recently drawn attention with the involvement of several prominent political figures from across different parties.
