Reacting to the surprising turn of events in Gabon where the military took power from re-elected President Ali Bongo, Reno Omokri, a well-known political commentator, voiced his concerns over the prevailing political climate in West Africa. CONTINUE READING
Omokri stated, “The military coup in Gabon is a stark reminder of the delicate nature of democracy in our region. It underscores the necessity for institutions like ECOWAS to ensure that the democratic process is respected in all member countries. The sequence of coups across West Africa harks back to the 1960s, when a similar chain of events destabilized several nations in quick succession.”
Drawing parallels between past and present political upheavals, he continued, “The events that began in Togo in January 1963, spreading to Benin, Nigeria, and Ghana, have left an indelible mark on West African history. The domino effect of these coups made our region known as the ‘coup belt’. Sadly, recent events in Niger and now Gabon suggest that history may be repeating itself.”
Reno Omokri emphasized Nigeria’s role as a regional power and the responsibilities that come with it. “Nigeria cannot remain passive in the face of such threats to democracy in the region. Our nation’s leadership, including the opposition, must unite behind President Bola Tinubu to counteract these undemocratic shifts.” CONTINUE READING
He concluded by urging all Nigerian leaders, both past and present, to rally together. “It’s imperative that we support efforts to reinstate the democratically elected government in the Niger Republic and address the recent developments in Gabon. This isn’t just about two nations; it’s about the future of democracy in West Africa.”
