The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, issued this warning while conducting a routine inspection of the built environment in the Lekki/Ajah corridor on Wednesday.
Olumide directed the sealing and partial removal of several non-compliant structures in various locations within the area. He also issued a strong ultimatum, instructing owners and developers of buildings situated beneath the powerline to evacuate the premises within two weeks.
He emphasized that no structures are permitted beneath the powerline, which should exclusively be used for the open display of goods and services.
Expressing concern over the widespread disregard for physical planning regulations throughout the state, Olumide emphasized that no one would be exempt from the enforcement of the law to ensure a livable and sustainable built environment.
He urged property owners and developers to obtain the necessary planning permits before commencing construction and adhere to the conditions outlined in their approvals to avoid legal consequences.
Additionally, while assessing the removal of structures along drainage alignments in Ikota Villa Estate by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the commissioner stressed the importance of obtaining approval prior to constructing buildings and ensuring compliance with the granted approvals. He highlighted that planning permits are crucial for environmental sustainability and national security.
