The statement, conveyed by Mr. Clement Ezeorah, Assistant Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Works, was issued in Abuja on Sunday.
According to the statement, the minister made this announcement during a working visit to inspect various bridges in Lagos State, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, Falomo Bridge, Iddo Bridge, Eko Bridge, Marina Bridge, and Iganmu Bridge.
During the inspection, the minister highlighted the need to open the deck on Eko Bridge for maintenance work.
Umahi commended President Buhari’s administration for its efforts in bridge construction and maintenance, particularly addressing issues faced by the Second Mainland Bridge, also known as Eko Bridge.
“Eko Bridge suffers two problems – the lack of maintenance and the degradation of its bearings. There are numerous air gaps, but the last administration did commendable work,” the minister said. He also noted that the maintenance work is ongoing and is expected to be completed by 2024, with an increased workforce and additional equipment.
The minister stressed the critical importance of the Eko Bridge for transportation into Lagos Island and expressed the need to address the comprehensive maintenance requirements of the Third Mainland Bridge.
He pointed out that the deflection on the Third Mainland Bridge was a result of inadequate maintenance by previous federal administrations, and it was only after President Bola Tinubu assumed office as the governor of Lagos State that the facility began to receive attention.
