According to a documentary shared on X, between January 6 and 12, 2023, a total of 211 incidents of oil theft and vandalism were documented. The NNPCL emphasized its commitment to curbing the menace of crude oil theft, highlighting that it inspected an illegal crude oil vessel during this period, loaded with thousands of metric tonnes of crude. The vessel was intercepted by Tantita Security Services, a private security firm, in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, while loading directly from an offshore platform in Bayelsa State. The company reported the arrest of all 23 crew members aboard the illegal vessel.
In a post on its official X handle on Monday night, the NNPCL shared that the Group CEO, Mr Mele Kyari, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, visited Oporoza, Warri, Delta State, to inspect the illegal crude oil vessel named MT Kali. General Musa emphasized the military’s dedication to collaborating with the national oil firm and other security agencies to halt crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.
The NNPCL’s unwavering determination to address the issue was underscored by a recent disclosure that it had uncovered 52 illegal refineries a week prior. During that period, 32 illegal pipeline connections were also exposed, leading to the destruction of the identified illegal refineries in Abia, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa states.
Furthermore, the company stated that between December 30, 2023, and January 5, 2024, 157 incidents of oil theft were recorded from various sources, including Nigeria Agip Oil Company, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, Maton Engineering Limited, Tantita Security Services, Shell Petroleum Development Company, NNPCL Command and Control Centre, and Government Security Agencies. The NNPCL elaborated that the 52 illegal refineries discovered in the past week were distributed across Abia, Imo, Rivers, and Bayelsa states, with 32 illegal connections identified in various parts of the Niger Delta, including Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta states. Additionally, seven illegal storage sites were uncovered in Akwa Ibom State, revealing buried drums of crude oil.
In conclusion, the NNPCL’s comprehensive approach, involving the identification, inspection, and dismantling of illegal facilities, demonstrates a resolute commitment to eradicating the persistent issue of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region.
