The Ministry of Works, tasked with the maintenance and repair of over 33,000 kilometers of federal government roads nationwide, witnessed a boost in its capital budget from N617.9bn to N987.3bn, as outlined in the approved budget obtained by reliable sources.
A detailed analysis of the budget document reveals the introduction of several capital projects. Notable allocations include N94.83bn for the construction of the Lafia road and dualisation of the 9th Mile (Enugu) Otukpo-Makurdi (Keffi Phase II) road project, N15bn for the Ota-Idiroko road construction (sections one to three), N4bn for the Iyin-Ilawe Ekiti road construction (sections one to three), and N13.5bn for the rehabilitation of Enugu-Port Harcourt road (sections two and four).
The budget also allocates N22.750bn for the dualisation of the Benin-Ilesha road, N10.1bn for the construction of the Malando-Garin-Baka-Ngaski-Wara road in Kebbi State, and N11bn for the construction of the Koko-Besse-Zaria-Kala Kala road in Kebbi State.
Additionally, specific projects such as the dualisation of Aba-Ikot Ekpene road, repair of the Iganmu bridge, and rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway Section are allocated N3.75bn, N1.21bn, and N2bn, respectively.
Other provisions include N10.7bn for the dualisation and construction of the Kano-Kwanar Dauja Hadejia road, N12.3bn for the reconstruction of the Amasiri-Uburu-Mpu-Ishiagu road, and N5.1bn for culverts and drains at flood-prone areas in the South-West.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Works secured approval for N3.35bn to procure vehicles for consultants and security supervision.
Despite historical challenges with road infrastructure, Minister of Works David Umahi, during budget defense, urged the National Assembly to increase the ministry’s 2024 budget to approximately N1.5tn. This increase aims to facilitate the completion of at least 10 critical roads and bridges in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. With the near-granting of this figure, Nigerians anticipate significant improvements in road quality and durability.
Umahi, in a recent meeting, tasked contractors with completing 150km of roads in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in 2024, excluding palliative work and other special projects initiated by the Federal Government. This ambitious goal is set to enhance the nation’s road network and contribute to overall infrastructure development.
