The kidnappers, operating with apparent coordination, target individuals of all ages, including children, youths, and families. Their audacious acts unfold both in broad daylight at busy intersections, markets, and schools, as well as under the cover of night. Disturbingly, between January 4 and January 7, a staggering 85 people were reportedly abducted, with 22 individuals taken in a single incident in Kawu village, Bwari Area Council.

In a chilling display of violence, gunmen invaded Sagwari Layout Estate, Dutse, Abuja, on January 7, using sophisticated weapons to abduct at least ten individuals. Tragically, reports suggest that three victims may have been killed as a stark warning to their families negotiating the ransom. The ransom demands have escalated from an initial N60 million per person to an alarming N100 million.

A particularly heartbreaking incident occurred on January 13, 2024, when six sisters and their father were abducted in the Bwari Area Council. The subsequent killing of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar, one of the abducted girls, has triggered widespread anger. The sisters were among 23 victims abducted by the bandits, who also reportedly killed a policeman and injured another during the attack.

Recent developments reveal a continuous and escalating trend, with the abduction of two individuals from the Nigeria Post Army Estate, Kurudu, Abuja. The assailants, brazenly entering the estate, targeted a woman identified as the wife of lawyer Mr. Cyril Adikwu, along with her driver and house help. The incident, which unfolded in the Phase II area of the estate predominantly occupied by retired and serving military personnel, involved a harrowing shooting of the woman’s husband.

Residents recount hearing gunshots around 9:38 pm and swiftly securing their homes, but the kidnappers managed to escape before security forces arrived. It is believed that the illegal activities of land sellers in the area facilitated the kidnappers’ entry, as an unfenced part of the estate allowed their escape.

The plight of the victims has prompted a demand for a reevaluation of the Abuja Master Plan by the FCT Development Authority (FCTDA). Residents urge authorities to address illegal extensions preventing the proper fencing of properties, underscoring the need for immediate action to curb the rising menace of abductions in the nation’s capital.
