In a post on her X handle, Ezeilo expressed her dismay at the current economic challenges, citing the devaluation of the Naira and the impact of rising inflation on her finances. She highlighted the escalating costs by revealing that she recently spent N40,000 on a single trip load of water, amounting to about 2,800 gallons, in Enugu. Notably, the price had increased from N35,000 just a few weeks earlier in February.

Ezeilo attributed the fluctuation in water prices to the rising cost of diesel, as communicated by the tanker driver. She emphasized the ripple effect on consumers, pointing out that the ultimate buyer bears the brunt of such economic dynamics.

Drawing attention to the broader financial challenges faced by Nigerians, Ezeilo stressed that the proposed N1 million minimum wage by the Nigeria Labour Congress is not a matter to be casually dismissed. She illustrated the strain on her budget, indicating that purchasing two tankers of water per month at N80,000 would account for a significant portion of her salary as a professor in a federal university.

Ezeilo concluded by underscoring the multifaceted impact of these economic challenges, encompassing essential needs such as food, electricity, transportation, generator fueling, house rent, school fees, and healthcare. She called for urgent economic solutions to alleviate the burden on Nigerians and expressed hope for relief.

This comes after Ezeilo had previously shared her disappointment about the high cost of a return ticket to a West African country, lamenting that as a Professor of Law, she would need to save five months’ worth of salary to afford the trip to watch the African Cup of Nations final live in Cote D’Ivoire.
