The abduction of students by bandits in Kaduna and Sokoto States has elicited a somber response from Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Expressing her dismay during the launch of the WTO-ITC 2024 technical assistance programme for Nigeria in Abuja, Okonjo-Iweala called on the federal government to take swift action to secure the release of the abducted students.
In recent incidents, over 200 students were kidnapped when bandits invaded the Government Secondary School and LEA primary school Kuriga in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna. Additionally, bandits targeted Gidan Bakuso in Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State, abducting about 15 Tsangaya students, with several others reported missing.
As a mother, grandmother, educator, and advocate for the significance of education in fostering economic opportunities, Okonjo-Iweala expressed her sadness over the incidents. While condemning the kidnapping of students in the two states, she conveyed her hope that the authorities would be able to recover the students promptly.
She stated, “I am sad because I am here at a time when once more hundreds of our school children and teachers have been abducted. And with the representative of my brother, the national security adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, I hope we can be able to recover them soon in Kaduna and Sokoto.” The former Minister of Finance emphasized the urgent need to address these security challenges and ensure the safety of students and educators in the affected regions.
