The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended over 200 individuals suspected of involvement in foreign exchange scams and manipulation of financial markets.

Sources familiar with the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity to The PUNCH on Wednesday, disclosed that the EFCC currently holds over 200 suspected Bureau De Change operators in custody across the nation.

According to one source, “Over 200 suspects have been apprehended by the EFCC for forex scam and currency speculation. Not all the apprehended suspects are in Abuja or at our headquarters because they were apprehended in various states across the country.”

Another source confirmed, “I can verify that we have detained over 200 individuals for foreign exchange scam and manipulation of financial markets; they are all undergoing interrogation by our investigators to ascertain the extent of their involvement. A majority of them were detained in Abuja, Lagos, Rivers, and Kano States.”

A third source emphasized, “The crackdown on forex scammers is expected to yield positive outcomes. Many of them have been apprehended, and they will face the consequences of their actions.”

The PUNCH had previously reported that the EFCC expanded its operation targeting BDC operators, apprehending traders in Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt. This action is part of the Federal Government’s initiative to mitigate the rapid depreciation of the local currency.

The government attributes the significant devaluation of the naira to the activities of speculators in the forex market and digital marketing sphere.

On Friday, May 17, operatives from the Uyo Zonal command of the EFCC arrested five suspected forex speculators at the Ama-Hausa mosque, along Hospital Road, Aba in Abia State.

The arrested individuals are: Hassan Umaru, Haruna Umar, Badamasi Abdullahi, Auwal Muhammed, and Kasimu Muhammed.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, in a statement, disclosed that the suspects were found with various currencies in different denominations at the time of arrest.

Oyewale stated, “The recovered currencies include: 23,000 Won (Korean currency), 52 Yuan (Chinese currency), $6,500 Nippon Ginko, 40 notes of Dalawampung Piso (Philippines currency), 20 Gambian Dalasis, 20 Swaziland currency, and N382,000.

“Other items recovered from them include seven mobile phones, one power bank, one air pod, and one ATM card.

“They were apprehended by operatives of the command following weeks of surveillance and credible intelligence. The suspects will be prosecuted as soon as investigations are concluded.”

In another development, Oyewale revealed that the Enugu Zonal Command of the EFCC arraigned Daniel Chukwuka Koussou, a forex broker, before Justice C. O. Ajah of the State High Court sitting in Independence Layout, Enugu State
