This theft is part of a troubling pattern of vandalism at the stadium. Despite the presence of police and private security, thieves have repeatedly targeted the facility, evading detection. Previous incidents include the theft of 27 air conditioners, which remain unrecovered.

A source told Blueprint that the thieves had easy access to the stadium’s cables after the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) disconnected it from the national grid due to unpaid debts. The theft only came to light a few days after the cables were taken.

The ongoing security failures have drawn criticism towards the stadium’s management and sports authorities. The frequent thefts have disrupted events, forcing organizers to rent generators to power their activities.

The stadium’s condition jeopardizes its reputation and functionality, underscoring the need for immediate improvements in security and maintenance. According to a top AEDC official, restoring electricity to the stadium would cost around N1 billion, influenced by the current economic situation and the need for imported materials.

Built in 2003 at a cost of N54 billion (about $360 million), and refurbished in 2022 for $1 million by Nigerian business magnate Aliko Dangote, the stadium faced significant vandalism in September 2024. It also serves as the office for the Minister of Sports Development and other organizations.

DianaMary Nsan, Special Assistant on Media to Minister Enoh, confirmed the incident and directed inquiries to the stadium manager, Adams Abdullahi. Abdullahi detailed that the theft occurred on a rainy Sunday night, with the criminals removing approximately 100 meters of armored cable and single-core armored cable.

He explained that the stadium has been relying on diesel generators since last Monday due to the power outage, with diesel prices soaring to nearly N1,400 to N1,500 per liter. The generator consumes 200 liters per hour. Abdullahi emphasized the urgency of fixing the damage quickly, as waiting for the power distribution company to address the issue could take an extended period.
