The South-West forum, Afenifere, has strongly criticized the governors of the South-West region for the rising school fees and their attempts to “push children out of school” amidst the high cost of living. The statement underscores that the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s free education policy was crucial to the socio-political and educational advancement of the region and Nigeria as a whole. Afenifere reminded the governors that their own access to education was made possible by Awolowo’s initiatives.
The group urged South-West governors to preserve Awolowo’s legacy, which established free and compulsory education for the region. Afenifere expressed concern that the current policies are undermining this legacy.
“Awolowo’s vision was to provide free education so that every individual could contribute positively to society. He believed that substantial state resources should be invested in education, which he saw as essential for personal and societal freedom,” the statement read.
Afenifere also highlighted the significance of maintaining educational standards for the Yoruba people and emphasized that education should be accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status. The group argued that education impacts society by enhancing the quality of life, fostering talent, and creating opportunities for individual and societal development.
“We face numerous challenges in our region, and increasing school fees only exacerbates these difficulties, potentially causing many students to drop out. We urge all South-West governors to halt any plans to raise school fees. Specifically, we call on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to reverse the recent hike in boarding fees from N35,000 to N100,000 per term,” Afenifere concluded.
