Tanko explained that the Obidient Movement would function in line with democratic principles and actively support Obi within his new political platform.
He made the remarks on Thursday during an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, shortly after Obi announced his exit from the Labour Party for the ADC.
Tanko expressed confidence that Obi would secure the ADC’s presidential ticket, citing the massive support base he brings to the party.
“As democrats, we will participate and contest fairly with all other aspirants, guided by democratic ideals. We are confident that, at the end of the process, Mr Peter Obi will emerge victorious, considering the large population of supporters he is bringing into the ADC,” he said.
He added, however, that the movement would respect the outcome of the party’s primary election should Obi lose the ticket to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Responding to a question on the movement’s next steps if Atiku emerges as the party’s flagbearer, Tanko said the Obidient Movement would remain within the ADC and continue to strengthen the party.
“With due respect to the ADC, the party gained significant momentum when people came together in agreement. The ADC vehicle truly took off with a single ignition yesterday—the excitement generated by His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi,” he said.
Tanko also disclosed that a large number of Obidient Movement members are prepared to formally join the ADC.
“They have made their position very clear and are ready to move in their millions into the ADC. That is a clear affirmation,” he added.
