Reports confirm that the Senate exercised its constitutional powers under the amended 1999 Constitution to approve Tinubu’s proclamation, which also included the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The House of Representatives had previously endorsed the emergency rule through a voice vote.
In a statement on Thursday, Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the Senate’s patriotic decision as a crucial step toward restoring stability after a prolonged political crisis that disrupted governance in Rivers and threatened national economic security for over 15 months.
He commended the leadership of the National Assembly, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers, for prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers people over partisan interests.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to working closely with the National Assembly to promote peace, economic resilience, and equitable development across Nigeria.
He also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their understanding and urged all stakeholders to support efforts to restore peace in Rivers State.
The statement added:
“The Rivers crisis had reached a dangerous tipping point, threatening vital oil and gas infrastructure and jeopardizing the national economy alongside the reform progress made since our administration began in May 2023.
As I outlined in my March 18 address, the near-total collapse of governance, risks to federal economic assets, and potential for widespread violence made decisive action inevitable. This emergency measure is necessary to protect livelihoods, secure infrastructure, and restore democratic governance.
The six-month emergency rule will empower the newly-appointed Sole Administrator to stabilize the state, address systemic failures, and foster dialogue among conflicting parties.
“Today’s decision proves that unity and patriotism can drive our nation forward. We remain committed to building a safer, more prosperous Nigeria, where every citizen’s potential is protected and nurtured.”
