However, neither Bazoum nor the alleged coup plotters have confirmed these reports.

Meanwhile, in response to the coup in Niger Republic, ECOWAS imposed new sanctions. The regional bloc had previously issued a seven-day ultimatum for the reinstatement of President Bazoum, warning of potential sanctions, including military action, if the coup leaders did not comply.

Despite ECOWAS’s position, the coup leaders remained defiant and severed diplomatic ties with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the US. They also closed Nigerien airspace indefinitely.

As the ultimatum expired, ECOWAS scheduled a meeting on Thursday to review the situation in Niger Republic. The spokesperson for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ajuri Ngeale, announced that additional financial sanctions had been imposed on entities and individuals associated with the military junta. These sanctions were implemented through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Ngeale clarified that the ECOWAS mandate and ultimatum were not solely Nigerian actions but represented the consensus position of member heads of state.

He emphasized that ECOWAS’s response to the coup was devoid of ethnic and religious considerations, reflecting the diverse composition of the regional bloc.

The president had engaged in consultations, both domestically and internationally, to address the unfolding situation in Niger Republic.

President Tinubu, serving as the chairman of ECOWAS, aimed to underscore that the bloc’s response represented the collective stance of member states, reflecting their commitment to addressing the coup impartially.
