Despite standing against Oshiomhole, whom he considered a father figure, Shaibu expressed surprise at Governor Obaseki aligning with another governorship aspirant. Recent endorsements by Peoples Democratic Party leaders in Edo North, Shaibu’s senatorial district, for Asue Ighodalo as the preferred PDP governorship candidate further fueled tensions.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Shaibu lamented the alleged betrayal, stating that he invested significant personal and political capital in supporting Obaseki’s reelection. He claimed to have contributed resources, including vehicles and finances, and supported the PDP ticket acquisition. Shaibu, feeling hurt and betrayed, emphasized that his sacrifice went beyond personal earnings and entitlements.

Downplaying Obaseki’s preferred candidate, Asue Ighodalo, Shaibu argued that Edo State cannot afford further experimentation, pointing to his role in covering governance gaps. He asserted that the people need someone experienced in the job, citing his efforts in filling the voids during Obaseki’s tenure.

Responding to concerns about his candidacy from Edo North, Shaibu rejected the notion that his geographical origin would hinder his chances. Instead, he emphasized that if equity and justice prevail, the PDP should zone the governorship ticket to his senatorial district. Shaibu asserted that the real issue lies in what he brings to the table, arguing that Edo North has never been given the PDP ticket for a gubernatorial election and emphasizing the local preference for a candidate familiar with the region.
