Speaking to his congregation, Gumi said he received an early-morning call from an undisclosed source, who allegedly briefed him on discussions at a high-level security meeting.
“They called me from Abuja and said there was a security meeting. They told me I have been marked for elimination. And who are Boko Haram?” he recounted.
According to the cleric, the caller indicated that his name was mentioned among those allegedly targeted for assassination.
“Even the Americans, they claimed, came to fight terrorists. So who are the real terrorists? They are the ones,” Gumi added, further blaming the United States for the rise and persistence of Boko Haram.
“They are behind it—Boko Haram. You will hear about attacks, bombs… it’s them,” he asserted.
Gumi also criticized Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and social divisions, attributing them to foreign interference, lies, and policies he linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump. He lamented the silence of Nigerian leaders and religious figures as the country sank deeper into crisis.
“Because of lies, you brought violence. But where are the leaders? What did they do? And what about the scholars? Everyone has gone into hiding,” he said.
The cleric accused external actors of using financial interests and false narratives to portray Christians as the sole victims of insecurity, creating division and suspicion across the nation.
“Which country would accept outside forces intentionally sowing division among its people? No country would allow that. They would either unite the people or leave them to deal with it,” he said.
Gumi further faulted political and religious elites for abandoning meaningful dialogue, warning that Nigerians are suffering hardship, oppression, and denial of rights.
“You brought hardship, you broke us, you oppressed us, and you denied us our rights,” he lamented, criticizing the labeling of regions along religious lines.
He concluded by stressing that fear, silence, and division are dragging Nigeria backward, and that continued inaction from leaders and clerics will only worsen the country’s challenges.
“This is the situation we face. It is dragging the country down,” Gumi warned.
