Over the past twenty-four years, Edo State has witnessed a relatively peaceful and progressive democratic evolution. Despite the inevitable tensions accompanying each election, administrations have generally operated within an atmosphere of order. Notably, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s tenure has stood out as particularly reformative, contributing significantly to the state’s economic development.
Critics may question Obaseki’s style and achievements, but the undeniable reality is that Edo now pays its workforce above the national minimum wage, boasts a world-class civil service secretariat complex, and has attracted over $500 million in private capital for the largest oil palm estate in sub-Saharan Africa. The state is also home to two of the country’s four modular crude oil processing plants, signaling a remarkable economic transformation.
Governor Obaseki, initially underestimated as a political neophyte, has defied expectations. His background as a successful investment banker brought a wealth of experience to governance, setting him apart from conventional politicians. As the 2024 election approaches, it becomes evident that only a few aspirants match Obaseki’s pre-gubernatorial proven capacity. Among them is Dr. Asue Ighodalo, co-founder of Banwo and Ighodalo, chairman of the Board of Directors at Sterling Bank PLC, and outgoing chairman of Nigerian Breweries.
Ighodalo’s extensive resume, including leadership roles in legal, banking, and energy sectors, positions him as a strong contender. Notably, his collaboration with the Edo State Government as an economic policy consultant reflects a commitment to the state’s development. Despite being a political novice, Ighodalo’s advisory contributions to the Obaseki-led administration showcase his familiarity with governance.
One distinguishing factor is Ighodalo’s ethnic background, hailing from the Esan group, predominant in the Edo Central Senatorial District. The sentiment of marginalization within this district adds another layer to the political landscape, emphasizing the principles of equity and inclusion crucial for unity.
While acknowledging the importance of diverse perspectives, it is essential to recognize that Edo’s next governor is not constitutionally bound by ethnicity. Rather, the focus should be on qualities such as capability, fairness, and the ability to maintain the state’s peace and progress. As the baton is passed from Governor Obaseki on November 12, 2024, Edo State deserves a leader capable of elevating the discourse and building on the successes of the current administration.
Asue Ighodalo emerges as a candidate with the potential to steer Edo toward sustainable development and progress, embodying the qualities needed to lead the state into a prosperous future. The people of Edo deserve nothing less.
