Following widespread concern from the Christian community in Nigeria regarding Jatau’s prolonged detention, the mentioned organizations stepped in to advocate on her behalf. In response to their efforts, Rhoda Jatau was granted bail and officially released from detention.
A source involved in the intervention stated, “We are pleased to report that Ms. Rhoda Jatau has been granted bail and subsequently released from detention today (yesterday). We have high hopes that the case will end in praise. Let’s continue to keep her in our prayers. The leadership of NIREC played a key role. Praise be to our God.”
Rhoda Jatau’s arrest on May 20, 2022, stemmed from a WhatsApp message she sent, a response to the tragic murder of Deborah Emmanuel Yakubu in a mob violence incident over a similar accusation. Jatau faced charges under Sections 114 and 210 of the Penal Code Law, as well as Section 24 Subsection 1b(i) of the Cyber Crimes Act, including incitement of public disturbance, exciting contempt of religious creed, and cyberstalking. The collaborative efforts of CAN, NIREC, and Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria have now led to her release, marking a significant development in this controversial case.
