The development was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Adeniyi’s current tenure extension was scheduled to end on August 1, 2026. However, the newly approved extension will keep him in office until February 2027.

According to Onanuga, the extension is intended to allow the Customs chief complete the implementation of the National Single Window project and facilitate a smooth leadership transition within the service.

The presidential aide explained that during the extension period, Adeniyi will work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, while ensuring the retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory age of 60 or completed 35 years in service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before being appointed Comptroller-General by President Tinubu in June 2023.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Customs Service recently handed over several luxury vehicles stolen from Canada after intercepting them at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The vehicles, which included Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes-Benz models, were officially returned to Canadian authorities during a ceremony held at the port on May 4, 2026.

The Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Nasser Salihou, received the recovered vehicles from the Customs Area Controller of the Tin Can Island Command, Comptroller Frank Onyeka.
