According to Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA spokesperson, the arrest and confiscation were the result of credible intelligence gathered. This development followed another significant arrest the day before, where NDLEA officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos apprehended Godwin ThankGod. The suspect was attempting to board a flight to Milan, Italy, carrying codeine-based syrup and rohypnol concealed in his luggage.
The interception at the airport also led to the discovery of 30,000 packs of tramadol, totaling 300,000 pills, arriving from Karachi, Pakistan. Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives at two courier firms in Lagos intercepted various quantities of tramadol and cannabis sativa concealed in sports canvas shoes en route to Oman. Another consignment of tramadol and rohypnol hidden in spices bound for the United Kingdom was also seized.
Additional operations were conducted by NDLEA operatives in Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Katsina, and Gombe states. In Ibadan, Oyo state, a clandestine skuchies factory operated by Oyadeji Dimeji was raided, resulting in the recovery of cannabis sativa, tramadol, rohypnol, and a liquid mixture known as skuchies. Several individuals were arrested in Ondo, Edo, and Kogi states, with large quantities of cannabis confiscated.
The NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign continued with advocacy efforts in schools, markets, worship places, and other locations across the country. Various sensitization lectures and advocacy visits were carried out, emphasizing the importance of combating drug abuse.
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, commended the efforts of the agency’s officers across different commands for their successful operations in the past week. He urged them to maintain the momentum in tackling drug-related offenses while simultaneously focusing on demand reduction efforts.
