According to a statement from the corps’ spokesperson, SC Friday Ekerete, the couple was arrested on Monday, July 22, 2024, on IBB Way in Uyo. This followed complaints from the public about their fraudulent activities, including extorting large sums of money under the pretense of providing employment in the State Civil Service.

The suspects allegedly used a fake NGO named ‘Child Support Foundation,’ which they falsely claimed was sponsored by UNICEF, to charge 7,000 people ₦1,000 each for a non-existent UNICEF grant.

The couple—Blessing Ezekiel Ubengama, 27, and Joseph Richard Ufot, 46—reportedly promised job placements in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service for a fee. Ubengama claimed to be a Personal Assistant to Dr. Helen Mbobo Akpan, a purported Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Despite issuing employment letters to many victims after a payment of ₦4,800 each, no salaries were paid, leading to suspicions and complaints about the scheme being a scam. The couple also failed to deliver on promised grants and agricultural support.

NSCDC State Commandant Engr. Eluwade Eluyemi condemned the fraudulent activities, describing them as criminally inhumane. He urged the public to be cautious of employment scams, stressing that recruitment for any organization in Nigeria should be free of charge. He advised individuals to verify job opportunities through official government offices or organizational websites and view any demand for payment as a warning sign.

Eluyemi assured victims that the suspects would be required to repay all extorted funds and will face legal action for their crimes.
