In addressing the challenges ahead, Adeniyi emphasized the economic expectations placed on the Nigeria Customs Service to contribute significantly to the national budget. He underscored the vital role officers play in meeting the NCS’s revenue projection, currently set at N5.1tn for 2024.
“As we enter 2024, we are confronted with formidable challenges in an economy that consistently relies on the Nigeria Customs Service for revenue generation to support the national budget,” Adeniyi remarked. He urged the newly promoted officers, in collaboration with their colleagues, to take the lead in achieving this ambitious revenue target.
Adeniyi stressed the importance of integrating stakeholders into the heart of NCS operations. Given the reliance of economic operators, importers, and exporters on the efficiency of customs processes, Adeniyi urged officers not to disappoint these crucial stakeholders.
Highlighting the significance of their responsibility, Adeniyi reminded the officers of the trust placed in them by the President and the nation’s economic development. He urged them to approach their duties with integrity, mindful of the special privilege bestowed upon them.
During a previous appearance before the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations on December 11, 2023, Adeniyi had disclosed the Customs’ revenue target of over N5tn for 2024. However, lawmakers advocated for an even higher target of N6tn. Adeniyi had explained that the primary sources of revenue included duties on imported goods and excise duties on locally produced items, emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance the latter revenue stream. Further details are expected to be provided.
