The clash between the NNPCL and fuel marketers, represented by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, revolved around the removal of subsidy on petrol. While the NNPCL asserted that the government ceased subsidizing petrol since its removal by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, petroleum marketers argued that, considering the current exchange rate, the price of a liter of petrol should have increased to N1,200.
Ukadike Chinedu, the National Public Relations Officer of IPMAN, claimed that the subsidy on petrol was escalating, suggesting that the commodity’s cost should be approximately N1,200 per liter in a free market. This projection raised concerns among Nigerians about a potential hike from the current N600 per liter to N1,200 per liter.
In response, NANS, through a statement signed by the factional President Pedro Obi, expressed deep concerns about the possible consequences of fuel price hikes on the already financially burdened student community and the Nigerian masses. The association emphasized that further increases in fuel prices could exacerbate challenges faced by students, potentially leading to withdrawals from school due to financial difficulties.
NANS declared its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring their right to quality and affordable education. The association warned the Federal Government and NNPCL that any attempt to raise fuel prices would be met with strong resistance. NANS pledged to mobilize students and the masses to challenge such policies, expressing discontent and demanding a reversal.
The association called on students and concerned citizens to remain vigilant and prepared to stand up for their rights. Meanwhile, the NNPCL, through its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, assured the public that there was no plan to increase the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol). The company urged motorists not to engage in panic buying, emphasizing the ample availability of petrol across the country.
