In an internal memo dated September 24, 2025, and signed by the Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, the company said the restructuring became necessary following “several reported cases of sabotage in different units of the refinery, raising serious safety concerns.”

The notice directed affected staff to hand over company property to their line managers and obtain clearance before receiving benefits to be computed by the Finance Department in line with service conditions.

The development, however, fueled speculations of mass layoffs.

Speaking to Punch on Friday, a senior official of the refinery, who confirmed the authenticity of the letter, stressed that the move was being misinterpreted.

“Yes, the letter is genuine, but the interpretation being circulated is wrong. This is not about unionism or indiscriminate sackings. The exercise is targeted at specific individuals linked to sabotage. It’s a clean-up to plug leakages and protect assets,” the source explained.

He added that those affected were not permanently dismissed but temporarily removed pending the conclusion of investigations, after which they could be reabsorbed.

“This is not a mass sack. The word ‘sack’ wasn’t used at all. It’s simply a system check. The step was taken suddenly so that those involved in sabotage would not have time to cover their tracks,” he said.

The official emphasized that the refinery remains fully operational, with both Nigerian and expatriate workers actively on duty.

“As we speak, work is ongoing at the refinery. Anyone not involved in the sabotage has no cause for concern,” he assured.
