Bello reportedly bypassed standard procedures at the EFCC because he was accompanied by the sitting Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, who holds immunity from prosecution. The EFCC, however, emphasized that it cannot be swayed by political influence or allow its processes to be compromised.

The anti-corruption agency also criticized Governor Ododo’s involvement in the case against Bello. The source explained, “When it was clear that Bello arrived with the governor and other prominent figures, the EFCC Chairman instructed that no official should attend to him. His method of arrival was a breach of our standard operating procedures. No individual, regardless of their status, should show up for an EFCC invitation with a convoy and a sitting governor.”

The source further noted, “By coming with the governor, who has immunity, Bello bypassed several necessary steps in the documentation process. The EFCC did not summon the governor, so there was no justification for him to accompany Bello to our headquarters.”

The EFCC expressed unease with Governor Ododo’s involvement in the matter and reiterated that Bello was expected to attend with legal representation, not political figures or high-profile individuals. The agency made it clear that it would not tolerate any attempts at intimidation or political manipulation, with the source adding, “This led the EFCC Chairman to order that no official engage with Bello. He must follow the proper procedures like any other individual invited by the commission.”

The EFCC also accused Bello’s media team of attempting to spread false narratives, particularly by claiming that Bello was already in EFCC custody. “The commission was displeased with the premature and misleading reports by Bello’s media team, which created the false impression that the former governor was already in custody,” the source explained.

Naija News previously reported a dramatic turn of events on Wednesday when Bello’s media team stated that he had honored the EFCC’s invitation by appearing at its Abuja headquarters. The EFCC, however, swiftly denied having him in custody through its spokesperson.
