Shaibu made the remarks after a thanksgiving service at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Benin, marking his 55th birthday. He commended the governor for his proactive approach, noting that Okpebholo’s appointments and policies would bring positive change to the people of Edo.
“The programs and appointments made by Governor Monday Okpebholo will certainly benefit the people of Edo. My prayer is that he receives the necessary funds to deliver the dividends of democracy,” Shaibu said.
He continued, “So far, the governor has performed admirably. I am particularly pleased with the flag-off of the flyover project, and I’m excited that from day one, he didn’t allow governance to stagnate. He immediately made appointments and hit the ground running, which is a great start. But as I’ve always said, we must pray for God to grant him the wisdom to lead this state.”
Shaibu further emphasized the importance of support, saying, “For the governor to succeed, we must provide both physical and spiritual backing. Leaders need constant prayers to avoid mistakes, and we must pray for Senator Monday Okpebholo so he can fulfill all the promises he made.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Shaibu expressed gratitude for the opportunities and challenges he had faced over the years. He acknowledged the ups and downs but thanked God for preserving his life through his years as a student union activist and deputy governor. “We survived the military dictatorship that emerged in a democracy,” he added.
Shaibu also encouraged young Nigerians to stand firm in defending their rights. “The youth now know their rights, and I urge them not to allow anyone to trample on them. Don’t give up—there is hope in Nigeria,” he said.
The event was attended by notable political figures, including the Acting Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhurdjakpo, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo, former Deputy Governor Dr. Pius Odubu, former Speaker Frank Okiye, Senator Matthew Uroghide, Hon. Razak Belo-Osagie, and several serving and former lawmakers from the Edo State House of Assembly, as well as local government chairmen.
