FCT Police Command spokesperson Josephine Adeh clarified that Oyekunle was not arrested but was instead relocated to ensure his safety. The statement read: “The FCT police command refutes the allegations regarding the arrest of photojournalist Jide Oyekunle during the protest near Eagle Square, Abuja. Mr. Oyekunle was moved from a potentially dangerous situation after he refused to leave the area, as some protesters had turned violent.”
The police emphasized their responsibility to protect lives and property during the ongoing protests, which have seen increased tensions and the use of teargas by authorities to control the crowd.
In related news, Premium Times journalist Yakubu Mohammed was reportedly assaulted by police officers in Abuja on Thursday. According to Premium Times, Mohammed was struck with the butt of a gun and batons, resulting in head injuries. He was briefly detained in a police van near the Head of Service Building in the Secretariat area of Abuja.
