During a technical working session focused on Group Savings, Loans, and Record/Bookkeeping held in Owerri, Imo State, National Project Coordinator Dr. Abiodun Sanni announced that this initiative is part of the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises Niger Delta project, funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Participants in the program were drawn from across the six Niger Delta states.

Represented by his Technical Assistant, Mr. Bunmi Ogunleye, Sanni explained, “The project encompasses states in the Niger Delta that will access a $60 million loan from IFAD. It consists of two phases over six years, beginning in 2019, with a total lifespan of 12 years.”

The initial six states participating since 2019 are Abia, Bayelsa, Ondo, Cross River, Edo, and Delta. Imo, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers were added in 2024, bringing the total to nine states involved in the project.

Sanni emphasized that the project aims to empower youths and women in agriculture to promote self-reliance and sustainability. “The empowerment focuses on selected commodities such as cassava, plantain, fish, rice, cocoa, oil palm, and poultry,” he added.

He further noted, “Our approach encompasses the entire value chain, including production, processing, and enhancing the capacity to market products. Training will strengthen the skills of select individuals in proper record-keeping and business documentation, enabling them to pass on their knowledge to others.”

To qualify for participation, individuals must be unemployed or underemployed and reside in rural communities.

National Financial Inclusion Specialist Obiageli Ekwelie explained that participants receive training from experts on specific commodities for a duration aligned with the gestation period of each commodity.

“At the conclusion of the training, participants will be equipped to run successful businesses with the startup capital provided, which may not be substantial. They will also develop a culture of saving, improve their credit ratings with financial institutions, and enhance their ability to document their business activities,” Ekwelie concluded.
