In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Health has introduced a new policy aimed at preventing health workers from taking leave of absence for opportunities abroad. Alongside this directive, the government has outlined plans to hire an additional 120,000 nurses.
During a statement on Saturday in Abeokuta, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized the necessity for healthcare professionals to resign from their positions if they intend to pursue opportunities abroad. The Minister highlighted the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s Executive Order in addressing the prevalent issue of brain drain in the health sector, commonly referred to as the ‘Japa Syndrome.’
Dr. Alausa further discussed the significant rise in the annual influx of nurses, soaring from approximately 28,000 to an anticipated 120,000 by the end of the year. This initiative comes as a response to the escalating trend of doctors, nurses, and other health workers leaving the country in search of better prospects overseas.
