Reports indicate that the incident occurred around 9 p.m., with flames engulfing Ibezim’s home at the time. Thankfully, he was not present during the attack. Ibezim represented the Imo North District as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from 2021 to 2023.

A video of the aftermath, shared online, captures the residents’ expressions of sorrow over the damage caused by the fire. Additionally, the same group of attackers reportedly targeted a study center of the National Open University in Nsu the following night. Residents confirmed that both incidents were carried out by the same individuals, and another video showed the university complex ablaze.

**Police Response**
The Imo State command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the incidents. Spokesperson Henry Okoye stated that Commissioner Aboki Danjuma condemned the attacks as “senseless and unwarranted.” He noted that these violent acts undermine community safety and security, emphasizing that the police will take necessary measures alongside other security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Danjuma has directed the deployment of a tactical police unit to apprehend those involved and ordered a thorough investigation by the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department.

These attacks come amidst accusations against Ibezim regarding his involvement in establishing an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp at the National Open University in Nsu, intended for individuals displaced from northern Nigeria. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other pro-Biafra groups have criticized this initiative, vowing to oppose it. In a statement, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful accused the Nigerian government of attempting to “infiltrate” the South-East region. While IPOB, which advocates for the secession of parts of the South-East and South-South from Nigeria, has denied involvement in local criminal activities, Ibezim has refuted the allegations against him.

In a statement issued later that day, Ibezim clarified that he did not facilitate the federal government’s relocation of IDPs and refugees to the community. He emphasized that the university had been operational since October 2023 and that his delegation was there solely to explore the use of the facilities for skills acquisition.

“For emphasis, I must restate that there are no plans to settle IDPs, refugees, or migrant persons at the National Open University Centre, Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA. Any such claim is categorically false,” he asserted. “I will never be part of such a plan. The objective is to provide skills training for our vulnerable youth from the South-East.
