Although the arrangement has not been formally announced, sources indicate that Kwankwaso may serve as Obi’s running mate for the 2027 general elections.
Party insiders told Leadership Weekend that the agreement was concluded in Abuja after weeks of quiet negotiations led by key ADC stakeholders aiming to produce a broadly acceptable ticket.
The reported Obi-Kwankwaso partnership is expected to pose strong competition to other presidential hopefuls within the party, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
The development has sparked reactions online, with supporters branding the alliance the “OK Movement,” interpreted as either Obi-Kwankwaso or Obidient-Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Sources within the party said the alliance is designed to combine Obi’s strong backing in the South-East and South-South with Kwankwaso’s influence in the North-West, thereby boosting the party’s national appeal ahead of 2027.
Meanwhile, a senior member of Atiku Abubakar’s camp welcomed the development, describing it as part of the democratic process, while maintaining that Atiku remains the most experienced and viable candidate in the race.
“We welcome the competition. Atiku has the structure and goodwill across the country. This is democracy, and we are not worried about any alliance,” the aide said.
Supporters of Rotimi Amaechi also downplayed the significance of the reported deal, calling it a temporary arrangement that would not significantly alter the dynamics of the primaries.
“Politics is about structure and numbers, not just alliances. Amaechi is engaging widely and will present himself at the right time,” a loyalist said.
In Kano, members of the Kwankwasiyya movement have praised the reported alliance, describing Kwankwaso’s willingness to take the vice-presidential role as a sign of strategic thinking.
A local coordinator in Fagge, Sani Bello, said the move reflects a commitment to a broader goal. “Kwankwaso is a strategist. If this decision improves our chances, then it’s worth it. The priority is to move the country forward,” he said.
The reported development marks a shift from Kwankwaso’s earlier stance before the 2023 election, when he rejected the idea of serving as Obi’s running mate, insisting at the time that his political standing was stronger.
