This action transpired during the ongoing school inspection program aimed at evaluating the quality of education provided by institutions.
The disclosure was conveyed by Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Culture, during a press briefing following the Executive Council meeting this week.
Kanu clarified that the closures were part of the “Reclaim Our Schools Initiative” program initiated by the state government to elevate the standard of education.
Providing insights into the ongoing school inspections, Kanu revealed that approximately 900 schools across the state had undergone evaluation, and some had fallen short of the expected standards, resulting in their closure.
“The inspection of schools is ongoing. At the last count, about 900 schools had been inspected. A few of the schools have not been so lucky.
They fell short of the required standard and were shut down. That exercise is ongoing, and it speaks to the determination of the state government to reform the education sector,” said Commissioner Okey Kanu.
Furthermore, Kanu announced upcoming road commissions by Governor Alex Otti. Additionally, the state’s Ministry of Works received directives to commence rehabilitation on Finbar’s road and Ahieke-Lodu roads in Umuahia.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, also addressed the press, stating that the newly nominated Transition Council Chairmen in the 17 LGAs would serve for a statutory period of six months, renewable by law. He added that the lists of councilors for the respective LGAs would be made public soon.
