Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this appeal during a visit to the BBC headquarters in London. According to a statement from his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim, the visit is part of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation’s efforts to strengthen relationships with both international and local media.
During his meeting with senior BBC executives, including Jonathan Munro, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of BBC News and Director of the BBC World Service, Idris acknowledged the BBC’s role in narrating Nigeria’s political landscape but called for more balanced reporting. He stressed that media plays a crucial role in shaping narratives, fostering understanding, and driving development. Therefore, media organizations with global reach should enhance their understanding of the socio-political, economic, and cultural contexts of the regions they report on.
Idris encouraged the BBC to highlight Nigeria’s achievements and progress, particularly by focusing on stories that inspire hope and showcase positive outcomes in the country. He pointed out that Nigeria’s dynamic youth population is eager to embrace opportunities despite significant challenges, which merits greater emphasis on the country’s successes.
