The House has tasked its Public Accounts Committee with scrutinizing the utilization of funds allocated or disbursed as COVID-19 interventions to Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) during this period. The committee is expected to present its findings within weeks for further legislative action.

This resolution emerged following the endorsement of a motion presented by Hon. Nyampa Dauda Zakari from Adamawa State during a plenary session on Tuesday.

In his presentation, the legislator recalled that the sum of N83.9 billion was allocated for the COVID-19 response in the 2020 Appropriation Act, along with an additional N100 billion in intervention funds through supplementary budgets and contributions from international donor agencies.

He expressed concerns over reports from the Auditor-General and other sources indicating that substantial funds designated for COVID-19 relief measures and international donations were diverted and lacked proper accountability by various MDAs.

Zakari emphasized that the absence of transparent financial oversight regarding funds earmarked for COVID-19 interventions, both from the Federal Government and global donor agencies, could have adverse economic implications and potentially lead to missed opportunities for Nigeria.
