This “Iddah Period Law” was prompted by a motion from the State House of Assembly, urging the government to address the issue. Acting on recommendations from the Executive Council Members, the Executive Arm approved and implemented the policy.
Alhaji Falalu Bawale, the Head of Civil Service for Katsina State, confirmed these developments in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, July 22. He explained that a circular has been issued to all state ministries, departments, and agencies, instructing them to grant female employees the necessary time to observe the Iddah period as required.
“We initiated discussions at the National Council on establishment to incorporate this provision into the civil service regulations, allowing women who have lost their husbands to stay and observe the Iddah period,” Bawale stated. “The council granted states the flexibility to establish rules that best suit their needs. Subsequently, we drafted a memorandum and presented it to the state executive council, which graciously approved and adopted our recommendations.”
“We have now issued a circular to all ministries, departments, and agencies, mandating them to grant female officers the opportunity to observe the Iddah period. This directive is now legally enforceable,” Bawale concluded.
