The IYC President, Jonathan Lokpobiri, lamented the lack of swift action from the Nigerian Police Force to ensure justice for the slain Ijaw youth.
“We are here to protest the extrajudicial killing of one of us, Alafuro Peterside, by a trigger-happy police officer last Thursday,” stated Lokpobiri during the protest.
He expressed frustration at the lack of an official statement from the Police Command and the challenges encountered in seeking resolution.
Addressing the protesters, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Emeka, emphasized the gravity of the incident and assured them that the responsible police officer would face legal consequences.
He affirmed the commitment of the police to conduct internal investigations and eventually present the case to court based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Emeka urged the youth to allow the legal process to take its course, highlighting that the incident was not just an affront to the Ijaw community but to the state and humanity at large. He reassured them of the police’s determination to uphold justice in the matter.
