During a meeting organized by the Arewa Consultative Forum, Kano State chapter, the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, emphasized that the Emirate would no longer tolerate the abduction and trafficking of children. Represented by Dan Malikin Kano, Ambassador Ahmad Umar, the Emir expressed concern over the worsening situation and called for proactive measures to curb it.
The Emir asserted, “This ugly trend must stop. We will no longer accept a situation where our children are kidnapped, sold, and their tribe and religion changed. We must take decisive action to halt this illicit activity, as it is spiraling out of control. We, as a community, must intervene to put an end to it. Only God knows how many more of our children are currently kidnapped.”
Similarly, Sarkin Shanun Kano, Shehu Muhammad, conveyed the emirate’s profound disappointment regarding the abduction of minors. He labeled the situation as distressing and urged for an urgent and lasting solution, emphasizing Kano’s historical tradition of welcoming visitors.
Addressing the issue, Eze Boniface, the Eze Ndigbo in Kano State, insisted that the recently apprehended child traffickers must face the full force of the law. He dissociated the Igbo community in Kano from the criminal acts, condemning the kidnapping of children from Bauchi State. Eze Boniface commended the police for their swift action in rescuing the children and called for continued efforts to rescue all kidnapped individuals, particularly children.
Dr. Gwani Umar, the convener of the meeting and Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Kano State, urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chief Judges of the states to ensure that justice is served swiftly to deter potential perpetrators. He advocated for legislative measures that impose severe penalties, such as life imprisonment, for those involved in kidnapping and child trafficking. Dr. Umar also emphasized the role of traditional institutions in addressing the issue, urging them to engage ward leaders to ensure parents remain vigilant, as child kidnapping is not exclusive to a particular ethnic group. He commended the efforts of the Kano Police Commissioner, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, and called on other northern states to emulate their relentless pursuit of justice.
