The Minister offered this reassurance during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Mines Action Services (UNMAS) Representative on the 24th of October 2023 in Abuja.
Matawalle affirmed that the Federal Government is keen to collaborate with UNMAS to devise a practical solution for reintegrating IDPs and farmers into society to enhance their quality of life.
“We are in the process of redesigning an action plan for the return of IDPs and farmers to their farmlands,” he emphasized.
He also highlighted the importance of the Federal Government providing vital technical assistance for establishing a national mine action center in the North East, which could be extended to the North West, where insurgency incidents have risen. This center would enable IDPs to return to their communities and gain access to quality education.
The United Nations Mines Action Services Representative to Nigeria, Edwin Faigmane, expressed UNMAS’s commitment to collaborating with the Nigerian Army to ensure the success of Mines Action Services Operations in Nigeria. He stressed the need to conduct Technical Surveys to identify hazardous areas that require clearance before other activities can proceed.
