Between July and August 2024, at least 467 Nigerians were killed in Kaduna, Benue, Katsina, and Plateau states, according to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). On Friday, the NHRC also reported that around 1,200 #EndBadGovernance protesters were arrested and detained by security agencies nationwide. The NHRC expressed concern that some detainees were held beyond the constitutional limits before being charged.
In its human rights update for July and August 2024, Hillary Ogbona, Senior Human Rights Adviser to the NHRC Executive Secretary, revealed that the Commission received 414,200 complaints related to human rights abuses over the past two months. The breakdown of fatalities includes 142 in Kaduna, 137 in Benue, 112 in Katsina, and 76 in Plateau State.
The NHRC emphasized that protesting is a lawful right in Nigeria and criticized attempts to suppress it. While condemning looting and property destruction as criminal acts, the Commission urged the government to distinguish between genuine protesters and criminals and to support victims of such acts.
Ogbona called for a human rights approach to managing protests and urged the government to address the underlying economic and political issues prompting them. He also stressed the importance of proper legal processes in prosecuting protesters, particularly those charged with treason.
Executive Secretary Prof. Tony Ojukwu condemned the use of excessive force by security agents during the protests and called for sustainable measures to protect and support displaced individuals affected by the unrest.
