In a statement released on Saturday, February 28, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is “closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the Middle East, particularly the military actions reportedly carried out by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran, and Iran’s subsequent retaliatory strikes on some Gulf countries.”

The advisory, signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, urged Nigerians in the affected areas to exercise extreme caution.

“All Nigerians in Iran and affected Gulf countries are advised to remain highly vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Avoid areas near strategic, military, or government installations, as these could become flashpoints,” the statement read.

The ministry also recommended restricting non-essential movement and travel until the security situation stabilizes. “Avoid large gatherings and public demonstrations. Limit all non-critical travel within the country until the situation becomes clearer,” it added.

Citizens were further instructed to comply fully with local authorities. “Strict adherence to all security directives issued by local authorities is essential for your safety. Cooperation with law enforcement is paramount,” the advisory stated.

The government confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran and missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia are on high alert to assist citizens and maintain communication.

The statement emphasized that “the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remain the top priority of the Federal Government,” and promised ongoing monitoring of the situation with timely updates.

Additionally, the government appealed for de-escalation of the conflict, urging all parties involved “to return to negotiations for the sake of global peace and coexistence.”

The advisory follows Saturday’s wave of strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, which caused explosions in Tehran and smoke plumes visible across parts of the capital.

US President Donald Trump described the operations as aimed at “eliminating imminent threats” from Iran. In a video address, he stated: “The United States’ military has launched major combat operations in Iran. We are targeting their missile infrastructure and naval capabilities, which will be completely destroyed.”
