Nigerian Lawmakers Propose 6-Year Single Tenure For President In Constitution Amendment

A group of 35 lawmakers, known as Reformers, has put forward significant changes to the 1999 Constitution, proposing the implementation of a six-year single tenure for the President and governors.

Additionally, the lawmakers are advocating for an amendment to the Constitution to establish two vice presidents from the southern and northern regions of Nigeria. Another major proposal from the group is the rotation of the Presidency among the six geopolitical zones, along with the suggestion to hold all elections on the same day.

During a briefing with journalists at the National Assembly on Monday, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, the lawmakers disclosed that they have drafted 50 proposed alterations, with six bills already listed for consideration on the floor of the House.

Ugochinyere outlined one of the proposed amendments, stating, “Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south), and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy).”

Highlighting the existing gaps in the country’s Constitution, Ugochinyere emphasized the need for urgent addressal.
