In a statement released by Mr. Ekerete Udoh, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the Minister expressed these observations during a media interaction following his inspection of facilities at the Victor Attah International Airport on Tuesday.
Keyamo, who was on a working visit to the state, emphasized the imperative for Nigeria to establish a world-class MRO facility, citing it as one of the first priorities he identified upon assuming office. Commending the progress at the Victor Attah International Airport, he acknowledged the facility’s potential to capture the entire aviation market in West and Central Africa, extending even to North Africa upon full operationalization.
Expressing his satisfaction with the facility’s completion status, estimated at 90-95%, Keyamo emphasized the positive impact it would have on the nation’s aviation sector. He pointed out that the lack of such facilities had historically compelled Nigerian aircraft to undergo maintenance abroad, causing prolonged downtime.
Keyamo praised the dedication and commitment of Akwa Ibom State to the aviation project, particularly commending Governor Eno for his relentless pursuit of the infrastructure development. He recognized the ongoing projects at the airport, including the new International Terminal Building, and characterized the site as a comprehensive hub capable of efficiently processing international passengers.
The Minister highlighted the economic significance of the MRO facility, emphasizing its potential to save foreign exchange and enable aircraft to meet international obligations without extended overseas stays. He expressed optimism that, once certified, the facility would position Nigeria competitively on the global stage.
Additionally, Keyamo commended the Akwa Ibom State government for its commitment to meeting international standards, pledging the full support of his ministry and regulatory bodies. He concluded by expressing gratitude to the people of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria for the remarkable aviation infrastructure and assured them of the government’s readiness for global certifications.
The Minister was accompanied on the inspection by Governor Umo Eno, members of his cabinet, the Managing Director of Ibom Air, Captain Mfon Udom, the Chief Operating Officer of the airline, George Uriesi, and other stakeholders.
