The Minister made this promise during his address at the 7th Registrar of Trade Unions National Workshop on “Current Challenges and Prospects of Trade Union Administration in Nigeria,” which took place in Abuja on Wednesday. He stressed that a well-trained and informed workforce would be easier to manage, as it is crucial for workers to understand the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes.
Dingyadi acknowledged that disagreements between labour and government are inevitable, but he stressed that addressing workers’ grievances through open communication remains the best strategy to avoid strikes. “The key solution is to engage with the aggrieved parties, listen to their concerns, and try to meet their demands. If we engage with everyone and address their grievances, there will be no need for strikes,” he said.
On the issue of government’s failure to fulfill previous agreements with unions, Dingyadi explained that many of these agreements were signed by previous administrations. He attributed delays in fulfilling the agreements to financial constraints, noting that the government’s ability to meet its obligations has been affected by limited resources. “Situations keep changing, and we are committed to doing what we can to honour these agreements as much as possible. While things are difficult due to the scarcity of funds, we will work together to find ways to move forward,” he added.
The Minister also outlined the key topics to be discussed at the workshop, which included the legality of strikes, the importance of promoting harmonious labour relations through collective bargaining, and creative solutions for implementing the new minimum wage. Additionally, discussions were set to address the future of work in Nigeria’s challenging economy, workplace relations, and effective trade union management in the face of ongoing challenges and opportunities.
